It would appear that among all European cities, Belgrade can boast the fact that it was the first to get a tavern (“kafana”). In 1522, the first tavern, located in Dorcol, opened its doors to patrons who could admittedly order nothing but coffee. In comparison, Sarajevo got its first tavern in 1529, London in 1652, Marseille in 1657, Vienna in 1694, Berlin around 1779, while Paris did not get one until roughly 1790. The majority of Belgrade’s inns and taverns were opened between the late 1800s and early 1900s.
